Building a Social-Network App Hypothesis

A framework for turning a consumer social idea into testable product hypotheses, evidence, validation order, and clear failure conditions.

A social app that “collects real life” may sound compelling, but it is not a hypothesis until its assumptions are explicit. Who is it for? What do they capture or share? Why now? What becomes better when their friends participate?

Write the hypothesis in layers: the user problem, the behavior you expect, the social mechanism, the evidence you need, and the condition that would prove you wrong. Examples from BeReal, Gas, Poparazzi, and Pokémon GO can inspire questions, but they are not proof that a new context will work.

Validate in the cheapest order. Test willingness to contribute before building a feed, test repeat behavior before optimizing invitations, and test small groups before assuming a broad network. Clear failure criteria protect a team from explaining away weak signals.
