Image2Vector: Open-source tools for tracing images into vectors

Compare six vectorization tools for color illustrations, monochrome logos, line drawings, and research.

·

Enlarging a PNG logo can reveal blurry edges. Vector tracing turns pixel boundaries into paths and shapes that can scale. An SVG, however, does not automatically recover the original editable layers or fonts.

The right first question is what you need to edit: filled color regions, or the center of a drawn line?

VTracer: a general-purpose color engine

VTracer is a Rust-based raster-to-vector project. It groups color regions and fits curves to their boundaries. It supports color and monochrome images, with a CLI, Rust library, Python bindings, and WebAssembly-based tooling.

Stacked shapes and mosaics with shared boundaries produce different editing structures; compare the options in the version you use. Photos can be traced, but many colors and details can create many paths. Neither a photo-realistic result nor a small file is guaranteed.

Vecto: shared boundaries and geometry

Vecto is a C#/.NET tracer built around a planar partition: adjacent regions share a fitted boundary. The project says this avoids gaps and overlaps and fits straight lines and circular arcs when appropriate.

Try it on flat logos and icons. Gradients, shadows, and photos may turn into bands of color. Its desktop app is for Windows; CLI builds are also available for macOS and Linux. Versions from v0.4.4 use AGPL-3.0-only; versions through v0.4.3 remain MIT. Check the license for the version you plan to integrate.

Potrace: a starting point for monochrome outlines

Potrace converts monochrome bitmap outlines into smooth curves and is used by Inkscape. It suits signatures and simple symbols. Prepare a binary image first; the official program accepts PBM, PGM, PPM, and BMP, so PNG may need conversion.

A black pen mark generally becomes a filled outline around the stroke. If you want to adjust it as a single stroke later, consider centerline tracing.

AutoTrace: follow the middle of a stroke

AutoTrace offers both outline and centerline tracing. The latter follows the middle of a line, making it useful for sketches and handwriting.

Intersections and variable-width brush marks are difficult to reconstruct faithfully. Inspect and repair the result in a vector editor.

StarVector and LIVE: two research directions

StarVector is a multimodal model that generates SVG code from images or text, presented at CVPR 2025. Unlike a strictly boundary-following tracer, it can alter details or text, so compare results carefully when exact identity matters.

LIVE, presented at CVPR 2022, progressively adds and optimizes closed Bézier paths using differentiable rendering. It is an image-specific optimization method rather than a trained generative model. Its layered shapes do not guarantee recovery of the source's original semantic layers.

Before and after tracing

Use the sharpest available source. Clean up contrast for monochrome artwork and simplify unnecessary colors or backgrounds for color graphics. Small text and photographs are particularly prone to distortion or complex output.

Compare the SVG against the source, inspect seams and fragments at high zoom, count paths and nodes, and manually repair important curves or text. A visually similar result may still be difficult to edit. For product use, check the license of the selected release, its dependencies, and any model weights separately.

Try the same image in two or three tools and compare visual fidelity and editability together.
