• Ownership: MillerKnoll. Herman Miller completed its acquisition of Knoll on July 19, 2021, and the combined company took the MillerKnoll name.
• Signature pieces: Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956, Charles and Ray Eames), Aeron Chair (1994, Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick, updated in 2016).
• Worth knowing: Few brands cover two markets this well, mid-century living room classics and ergonomic office seating. The Eames Lounge Chair has been in continuous production since 1956.

2. Knoll

• Country and founding: New York, USA, 1938, founded by Hans Knoll. Florence Knoll joined in 1943 and shaped the company's design direction.
• Ownership: MillerKnoll.
• Signature pieces: Barcelona Chair (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designed in 1929 for the German Pavilion in Barcelona), Tulip chair and table (Eero Saarinen, late 1950s).
• Worth knowing: Knoll is the licensed maker of designs by architects such as Mies van der Rohe, Saarinen, Marcel Breuer and Harry Bertoia. It is the brand that put European modernism into American offices and homes.

3. Vitra

• Country and founding: Switzerland, 1950, founded by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum in the Basel area, with a production site across the border in Weil am Rhein, Germany.
• Ownership: Family-owned. Nora Fehlbaum, the third generation, has led the company since 2014.
• Signature pieces: Panton Chair (Verner Panton, produced in series from 1967 to 1968), Eames Collection for Europe and the Middle East.
• Worth knowing: Willi Fehlbaum saw an Eames chair in New York in 1953, and licensed production of Eames designs started in 1957. That is why an Eames chair can legitimately carry either the Herman Miller or the Vitra name. The Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein has buildings by Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando and Herzog & de Meuron.

4. USM

• Country and founding: Münsingen, Switzerland, 1885. The family business made metalwork before it moved into furniture.
• Signature piece: USM Haller modular system (1963).
• Worth knowing: In 1961 Paul Schärer, grandson of the founder, hired architect Fritz Haller to design a factory and office building. The modular logic of that building led to the storage system. The chrome ball joints, tubes and panels are designed so the system can be expanded and rearranged later.

Italian high-end design

5. B&B Italia

• Country and founding: Novedrate, Italy, 1966, founded by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, who had earlier co-founded C&B Italia with Cesare Cassina.
• Ownership: Flos B&B Italia Group, owned by funds affiliated with Investindustrial and The Carlyle Group.
• Signature pieces: Le Bambole (Mario Bellini, 1972), Charles sofa (Antonio Citterio, 1997).
• Worth knowing: B&B Italia is known for sofas built on molded polyurethane foam, which gave upholstery a soft, sculptural shape without a visible frame. It is a clear case of a material shaping a form.

6. Cassina

• Country and founding: Meda, Italy, 1927, founded by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina.
• Ownership: Part of the Poltrona Frau Group, in which Haworth acquired a controlling interest in 2014. The group is now called Haworth Lifestyle.
• Signature pieces: LC2 and LC3 (Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand), Superleggera chair (Gio Ponti), Utrecht armchair (Gerrit Rietveld).

8. Poltrona Frau

• Country and founding: Turin, Italy, 1912, founded by Renzo Frau. The company moved to Tolentino in the early 1960s.
• Ownership: Haworth Lifestyle (Haworth took a controlling interest in 2014).
• Signature pieces: Chester armchair (1919), Vanity Fair armchair (first made as the 904 armchair in 1930).
• Worth knowing: Leather is the brand. Frau got the idea for the Chester from English leather club chairs he saw while working for a faux-leather company.

9. Minotti

• Country and founding: Meda, Italy, 1948, founded by Alberto Minotti.
• Ownership: Family-run, with the third generation now in the business.
• Signature pieces: Hamilton and Freeman sofa collections.
• Worth knowing: Alberto's sons named architect Rodolfo Dordoni art director in 1998, and the collection has been built around one visual language since. Few brands show so clearly what a long art director tenure does.

10. Flexform

• Country and founding: Meda, Italy, 1959, when the Galimberti brothers (Romeo, Pietro and Agostino) named the business Flexform. The family workshop is older.
• Signature piece: Groundpiece sofa (Antonio Citterio, 2001).
• Worth knowing: Citterio began working with Flexform when he was still a student. A low, deep sofa like the Groundpiece is something you judge by sitting in it, not by its dimensions on a drawing.

Scandinavian design

11. Fritz Hansen

• Country and founding: Copenhagen, Denmark, 1872, when cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen received his trade license.
• Signature pieces: Series 7 (Arne Jacobsen, 1955), Egg and Swan (Arne Jacobsen, 1958).
• Worth knowing: Jacobsen designed the Egg and Swan for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which opened in 1960. The hotel was planned as a complete work, from the building to the furniture. Series 7 grew out of Jacobsen's earlier Ant chair, using molded plywood.

12. Carl Hansen & Søn

• Country and founding: Odense, Denmark, 1908.
• Signature pieces: CH24 Wishbone Chair (Hans J. Wegner, designed 1949, in production since 1950), CH07 Shell Chair.
• Worth knowing: According to the company, the CH24 involves more than 100 production steps, and its paper cord seat is woven by hand.

13. HAY

• Country and founding: Copenhagen, Denmark, 2002, founded by Rolf and Mette Hay.
• Ownership: MillerKnoll holds a majority stake.
• Signature pieces: About A Chair (AAC) series, Palissade outdoor collection.

15. IKEA

• Country and founding: Sweden. Ingvar Kamprad registered the company on July 28, 1943, at age 17. The name comes from his initials plus Elmtaryd, the farm where he grew up, and Agunnaryd, the nearby village.
• Ownership: The IKEA concept is owned by Inter IKEA, while retail is run by franchisees including Ingka Group.
• Signature pieces: BILLY bookcase, POÄNG armchair.

16. Roche Bobois

• Country and founding: Paris, France, 1960, founded by the Roche and Chouchan families, who started by importing Scandinavian furniture.
• Signature piece: Mah Jong modular sofa (Hans Hopfer, 1971).
• Worth knowing: Its fabric collaborations with fashion names such as Missoni, Kenzo and Jean Paul Gaultier keep a 1970s structure looking new.

17. Ligne Roset

• Country and founding: France, 1860, when Antoine Roset started a bentwood business. The company took the Ligne Roset name in 1973.
• Ownership: Family-owned, with production in Briord.
• Signature pieces: Togo sofa (Michel Ducaroy, 1973), Ploum sofa (Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec).
• Worth knowing: The Togo is a low, folded-foam seat with no rigid frame. It was a bold shape in 1973 and is still in the catalog.

18. RH

• Country and founding: Eureka, California, USA, 1979, started by Stephen Gordon as Restoration Hardware. It became RH in 2012. Gary Friedman has led the company since 2001.

• Worth knowing: RH calls its stores galleries and sells through large catalogs. The brand is built on space and print as much as on products, and the scale suits American homes better than small apartments.

19. West Elm

Brands that look unrelated often share capital, distribution and sourcing. If you are applying for a job or an internship, the group is the employer, not the label on the chair.

Authentic, licensed and reproduction are three different things

• Authentic: Made by the brand under contract with the designer or the designer's estate, usually with a label or serial number.
• Licensed production: The same design made by different companies in different regions. The Eames Lounge Chair is produced by Herman Miller for the Americas and by Vitra for Europe and the Middle East. Both are authentic.
• Reproduction or replica: A copy made without a license. Depending on the country this can be legal, but it cannot carry the brand's name. This is why the same chair shape appears at very different prices.

When writing a specification, put the brand name and model code next to the design name. "Eames Lounge Chair" alone leaves room for a substitution.

How to use this list

1. Group by designer, not just by brand. Antonio Citterio links B&B Italia and Flexform, Rodolfo Dordoni shaped Minotti, and Philippe Starck links Kartell to plastic.
2. Remember the production method. The Panton chair is molded in one piece, the Wishbone chair is hand-woven, and B&B Italia is known for molded foam.
3. Name the year. "1956 Eames Lounge Chair" is a more precise reference than "mid-century chair".
4. See one in person. Finish, weight and seat angle never show up in photos.
